The Produce Marketing Association (PMA) is a global trade association, serving member companies around the world. The Centre for Growing Talent by PMA’s mission is to attract, develop and retain the fresh produce industry’s most valuable resource – talented people. The PMA in South Africa and Centre for Growing Talent by PMA have embarked on several projects to address the issue of human capital development in the fresh produce industry.
“Show-case the industry to young people to promote the exciting career opportunities in the Agri-food supply chain”, is the conclusive opinion of role-players in the agricultural industry in South Africa, following the success of Agricultural & Food Career & Bursary Fairs held at the Stellenbosch University and the University of Pretoria (UP) during the past two years.
This is an initiative of the Centre for Growing Talent by PMA, and four successful career fairs have been hosted in South Africa to date. The Career Fairs’ objective is to entice young people to consider a career in the agricultural/food industry. More than 4 500 young people are expected to visit the Career Fairs this year.
The target group is first-year B.Sc. Biological Science students, many of whom have not yet decided on an area of specialisation from their second year onwards. In addition, agricultural students currently registered at both the undergraduate and postgraduate level and students from other disciplines such as B.Com. and Engineering also visited the fair. Another target group is school learners, who are invited through the respective universities’ prospective student programmes.
